Stealing…

“When we fight like spoiled children to “keep” God in those things, we are fighting for idols.”
 –Rachel Held Evans

I’ve spent all year teaching the Old Testament, and of the many recurring themes, one has stuck with me more than any others: idols.

It’s real easy, I’ve said more than once, for us to look at the Children of Israel and judge judge judge them for their vain idol worship. But we are no different. We have traded golden calfs for myriad other idols, tangible and intangible, that we worship way more than we worship God.
And since I’m grappling with how to really write about Advent (my approach is proving to be rather emotionally exhausting, which I did not anticipate), I’m stealing from another blog today.

Celebrate your holiday however you see fit–because whether it’s Hanukkah or Solstice or Christmas or Festivus, in America, you can celebrate it without fear of being imprisoned.

Merry Christmas.
