The Best Parts of October

Yesterday I took advantage of a 30% coupon at Kohl’s and splurged on new sweaters. I hadn’t bought new sweaters in several years, and the upcoming weather report noted that temperatures would–finally–drop.

And they did. Today it was gorgeously crisp, the kind of chill in the air that begs for apples and salted caramel hot chocolate and sweaters and scarves.

It’s the first week in October, so the timing is perfect, and as it’s the first week in October, that means Saturday and Sunday is my church’s semi-annual General Conference. Or as I like to call it, “Church in my PJs.” Every six months, I make a big batch of pumpkin pancakes (and usually pumpkin bread with the remaining pumpkin) and bacon, of course, and I sit on the couch and watch church leaders speak on a variety of topics.

Some topics, I’ll be honest, I tune out…as a single and childless woman, I’m not a fan of the “hey, mothers, ya’ll are awesome” talks. But every now and then, a talk will seed my brain with all kinds of thoughts about how I can be a better person, how I can be closer to Christ, and most importantly, how I can have hope in these times when I’m feeling excessively hopeless.

So just to give you an idea of the kind of talk I love the most, I invite you to read or skim this one. I’ve been rereading it all week. It’s my most favorite talk ever. I first heard it when I was a missionary in Montreal and was about half-way through my missionary service. I was sick, I was weary, and I was certain I would never make it the full 18 months. This talk changed my life then, and every time I read it again, I’m reminded of how it made me feel all those years ago.

Happy General Conference Weekend, to all my readers, LDS or not. I’ll likely be happier on Monday.
