Ado Annie

In the musical “Oklahoma”–which, I’ll be honest, I’ve only seen once in its entirety because it puts me to sleep–Ado Annie sings a song about how she can’t resist any boy who gives her attention.

Annie and I have this in common, somewhat.

But when it comes to saying no to other people, I also struggle. Take dinner to someone? Sure. Run an errand for someone? Why not. Serve on a committee? Sure. Help everyone in my path with computer/technology issues at school? Absolutely. Play in the pit for the musical? Yeppers.***

But today I drew a line. The last couple of years I have worked football games for a little extra cash. I didn’t mind it too much (though working crowd control is a bit icky) but my summer of relaxation underscored the point that I work too much during the school year. Part of why I feel like I’m always at school is because every other Friday night, I didn’t leave school until 9:30 or 10 PM.

So when the email went out and my name was filled in to work every home game, I took a deep breath, composed a two-sentence email, and said no. I just can’t do it this year.

And now that I know I’ve said no once, I know I can say it again.

***FYI: I have already committed to playing pit this year. The choice of musical was just too good to pass up. I don’t know if it’s public knowledge yet so I’m not posting the title at this time, but it is one of my favorites. I am of sound mind and know what I’m getting into.
