A Feminist, A Democrat, and a Mormon Walk Into A Bar…

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how I became the person I am. Maybe it’s Courtney Kendrick’s posts on her blog, as she’s been parsing out her own life story, maybe it’s just another way that I’m trying to avoid all the work I need to do.

Either way, I’ve been kind of uninspired with blogging lately, so I thought I’d write a short series on how I became a feminist, a democrat, and sa Mormon.

Depending on where you are and the company you keep, any of these words–feminist, democrat, Mormon–are pejorative and condemning at worst, ostracizing and patronizing at best. Feminists are man-hating lesbians. Democrats are socialists, communists, or Marxists. And Mormons? Them people are just flat-out bizarre.

So I’ll spend this weekend (when I’m not grading) drafting these posts, and starting Monday, I’ll introduce my tens of readers to what it really means to be a feminist, a democrat, and a Mormon.

  1. Ugh… Must you analyze everything ad infinitum? How about just being!? Try to just see the beauty in the world around you – it really is amazing, that is the good of things around you that our Savior created for us

  2. Unlike Anonymous Crankypants, I think it's a fantastic idea. I love that my kids will have this piece of history from the most spectacular aunt ever. I find you inspiring.

I love your writing…I can't say it often enough. “Them people are flat-out bizarre.” haha!! Anonymous just totes confirmed that statement.
