Hiking in Ohio

I woke up yesterday morning feeling the best I had all week, and I was all set to buckle down and get back into the routine of comps reading I’d been doing, when I decided I wanted to go for a hike. I used to really love hiking, but that was when I lived in Montana and Utah, and there were mountains everywhere. It made me a hiking snob, really, and I haven’t been hiking in years.

A quick google search for hiking in Ohio revealed a set of trails near the Maumee State Forest, which isn’t far from Bowling Green. So I packed a snack, grabbed some water, and headed for the trail. This particular set of trails is comprised of 17 miles of hiking, biking, and horse riding trails, so I will go back many times and explore different trails, but here are pictures from my first hiking trip in ages.

I love this picture:

Me at the end of the trail. I turned around to go back the way I had come and got just a little bit lost. But I found my way back to my car, so it’s all good.

I enjoy finding typos in official plaques. Can you find the typo?

This is the sassafrass tree. That’s a fun word to say, sassafrass. Go ahead, try it!

I was on the trail for about an hour and a half, and after this week that was so hard, it was so nice to just be outside in gorgeous weather, doing something I loved. Hiking yesterday, as cheesy as it may sound, was almost like visiting a friend I hadn’t seen in ages. I really had forgotten how much I love to hike.

Music listened to on this hike: Tammany Hall NYC (LOVE THEM!), Colbie Caillat (not my fave, but was sis’ recommendation and was nice mellow sound for the forest) and Dixie Chicks’ most recent CD (One of my faves).

  1. oh hiking is nice except when it’s uphill and I can’t breathe! good job. and i’m especially impressed you went on your own. i’m scared to. I think mother has instilled a fear of death on the trail in me. but then again, I don’t do much by myself anyway. this could also be mother’s fault as she gave me 7 siblings.

  2. “Sassafras”….(waits for a chuckle…nothing yet)“Sassafras”….(still waiting)“Sassafras”….(shrugs shoulders)“Sassafras”….LOL…(there it is !!!…thought I was saying it wrong for a minute)

  3. Sarah, yeah I’m not sure my dad would have been proud of me for going solo, but I called my sis in Nebraska and a friend here in Ohio to let them know that if they hadn’t heard from me by 5:00 to send out search and rescue. I do a lot by myself, just because I don’t have many single friends here, and I’m often too impatient to wait for the arranging that goes with having kids.Mike–Glad you persevered to find the humor! 🙂

  4. I’m so glad to know you had called to let people know where you were. I was nervous thinking about you being out there alone.

  5. Sassafras…almost as much fun and Mufasa! I’m jealous you got to go hiking….although with my huge belly I feel like every time I go upstairs I’ve gone on a hike to rival Avalanche Lake!
